On March 12, 1998, K. Muinonen begun performing an assessment of this close approach with his Monte Carlo method; he had been obtaining many target plane positions outside of the confidence ellipse, but no impacts. He was doing the right thing, however the scare was over before his program had computed enough orbits to formally prove that the risk was negligible, although all the indications were in that direction.
